Fennel Restaurant, Inverurie

My dad and I headed to Inverurie for lunch, and as he hadn’t been to the Fennel I thought it was worth trying it again. We had no trouble getting a table downstairs, and started by sharing two starters: olives and feta cheese, and homecut chips with dip. The olives and feta were good, but a bit overpriced at £3.95, while the chips were really lovely – we should just have had a portion of chips each! To follow, I had the watercress, pear and goats cheese salad, while my dad had the paprika chicken salad, which came with a whole chicken breast rather than the usual chicken strips you would expect. They were both good, although perhaps a little skimpy on the portion side. My dad was of the opinion that the paprika chicken salad “wasn’t revolutionary”, but I guess a restaurant that wants to survive in Inverurie can’t necessarily afford to be too “revolutionary” with its food. I think the Fennel does well enough to offer the basic items like fish and chips alongside some more imaginative dishes. Tea and coffee were served with little shortbread biscuits. Along with two soft drinks, the bill came to around £35 – a reasonable enough price. Still one of the only (or perhaps even the only?) viable options in Inverurie for a fresh and modern evening meal.
