We were hungry but it was a bit early (5.30pm) for one or two of the restaurants in Linlithgow to be open for dinner, so we wandered along the high street until we came to Bar Leo, an Italian restaurant and bar. The décor is modern and clean, and it seems to be very popular with families – there was a kid’s birthday party going on, but it was tucked away somewhere and we weren’t disturbed by it at all. I had a thin-crust pizza with mushrooms, courgette, pepper and aubergine, which was tasty; while my partner had the “pollo Sophia Loren” – chicken breast in a tomato and cream sauce, served with asparagus and sauteed potatoes. He enjoyed it but I think my pizza was the better option. On the side we’d ordered a mixed leaf salad, but we got a salad with some iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and olives – ok, but not “mixed leaf” and not worth the menu price. For pudding I went for the tiramisu, which was nice but far too heavy on the cream for me, while my partner went for the chocolate fudge cake, which was fine enough. Tea and coffee were served with fudge. With two soft drinks, the bill came to £44.80 in total. Not exactly fine dining, but pleasant enough!
