Nawaabs Tandoori, Aberdeen

Five of met outside Nawaabs to discover the only one who’d been before had actually been a little bit on the tipsy side on the one occasion he was there……….as soon as we stepped inside, though, our apprehension disappeared – it’s a very nice restaurant, and the impressive (and extensive) menu soon convinced us that this was going to be a meal to enjoy. It actually turned out to be an excellent meal, certainly the best Indian meal I’ve ever had. I was delighted to find lots of well-thought out veggie options, including the vegetarian Thali for one, a sort of tapas-style offering of various different veggie dishes, accompanied by pilau rice and a whole naan bread. We were brought poppadums and chutneys with our drinks, and three of the party went on to order starters. I’m afraid I can’t quite remember what they were, but looking at the menu I think one was tandoori trout - certainly it a lovely piece of fish in dry spices - and another was duck, possibly the tandoori duck. For the mains, I had to have the vegetarian Thali, which turned out to be a real bargain at just over £12 for five little dishes centred round chickpeas, lentils, and mushrooms. In my experience vegetarians sometimes get a very raw deal in Indian or Chinese restaurants, often being palmed off with a handful of frozen veg in whatever sauce, but the quality of this meal was excellent! I really enjoyed it. Round the table everyone enjoyed the various dishes they’d ordered. Once the table was cleared we were brought a plate of refreshing cut orange, and to finish we had tea and coffee, served with wrapped squares of orange chocolate. We were brought the bill before we’d asked for it, but otherwise the service was fine. The total bill came to around £120; this included two glasses of wine, two or three Cobras, two soft drinks, four hot drinks, three starters, the veg Thali, four main mails, two portions of pliau rice, and two naan (not including the one I got as part of my meal). I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Nawaabs for a really enjoyable meal. I’m looking forward to going back!
