Four of us met for lunch at 12pm; I’d booked ahead for a table for six (adults), and when we arrived one setting was for a highchair! It didn’t matter as there were only four of us in the end, but it was a bit odd. Anyway, this was my first visit to the Handmade Burger Co. I don’t eat meat so had checked the menu online beforehand, and was pleased to see there were five veggie and two fish options. Meat eaters are of course spoiled for choice! A word of warning about the veggie options on the menu though – whilst in the restaurant I noticed several of them are marked with an asterisk, the comment for which reads “All of these burgers are sealed in our fryer before they are grilled”. I think this probably means the veggie burgers are initially fried on the same hot plates as the meat ones, so actually not veggie at all! The service here is a bit odd, as if someone couldn’t make up their mind whether to run it like an actual burger bar or a restaurant. Once you are seated, you look at the menu and then get up from your table and order at a counter, paying up front. Your food is brought out to you when it’s ready. I went for the vegetable and bean burger, while my dining partners ordered the cheese and bacon burger, the avocado and bacon burger, the Caribbean burger, and two sides of chips. I enjoyed my veggie burger, the beef burgers went down well, and the chip portions were generous. One diner expressed the opinion that the beef burger was a little bit dry, but otherwise good. I don’t think we’ll be in a hurry to go back though; two burgers, a portion of chips and two soft drinks came to just under £20, so quite pricy for what you get. Especially when you’re not paying for full table service!
